About this Episode

When asked about being a Black career and business woman in an interview, Oprah Winfrey responded: “There’s a wonderful phrase by Maya Angelou from a poem that she wrote called Our Grandmothers where she says ‘I come as one, but I stand is 10,000.’ When I walk into a room, and particularly before I have something really challenging to do or I’m going to be in a circumstance where I feel I’m going to be up against some difficulties, I will literally sit and I will call on that 10,000. I will call on the ancestors. I will call on those people who have come before me. I will call on the women who have forged the path…because I know that my being where I am and who I am didn’t come just out of myself. That I come from heritage, and so I own that and I step into that room not just as myself but I bring all of that energy with me.”

These powerful words and the rich energy of our collective being serve as the inspiration behind this new podcast. The I Come As One podcast is a convergence of all things Black women, with an emphasis on sharing and healing from our experiences in the workplace. Created and co-hosted by a talented trio of scholar-practitioners who recognized the need for powerful conversations, this space is designed to not only empower and inspire, but also provide information and resources to promote positive change.

Podcast co-hosts sitting and talking.
